The USA-Israeli imperialist war of aggression reveals European contradictions
The USA-Israeli imperialist war of aggression reveals European contradictions;
Or What did Trump and Merz talk about?
March 5 2026
Introduction
If wars could be characterised by only two words, these might include ‘abhorrent’, ‘dehumanising’. All reasonable humans know wars are ‘to be avoided’ if at all possible. But Marxist-Leninists also know that in today’s world, class realities do not allow that. Certainly revolutionary forces and coalitions may use wars to drive revolution. But only if objective circumstances align with the subjective presence of an existing influential Marxist-Leninist party.
Today international imperialists face each other’s enormous competition. It is this that drives the USA and Israeli ambition to devastate the Middle East. This means now to fragment Iran into pieces, control its’ oil, and the Straits of Hormuz. These are what the current horrific war aims to obtain for the USA and Israel.
Such wars spread widely and take no hostages at a state level. If civilians are not on the frontlines they can possibly avoid taking a clear position. But politicians of states cannot. Such wars habitually prise open any precarious and ‘polite’ stability, to flaunt on the world’s stage the underlying class and national divides.
Early in this war – indeed by the second day – the European power brokers and leaders of states, under the pressures of this war made their alliances clear.
Polar opposite positions have been taken in Europe.
- Spain as represented by Prime Minister Sanchez, and Germany as represented by Bundeskanzler Merz – lead opposing forces.
- Germany under Merz supports Trump and Israel’s war. Italy under Prime Minister Melloni follows suit.
- But Spain refuses to follow the German example – and somewhat more ‘diplomatically’ France’s Macron also stands away.
Spain has not openly supported Iran – but it also pursues strong trading with China. For these actions, Spain is being bullied not only by the USA…. but also by Germany.
President Macron of France has tried to ensure a central European armed force. One independent of the USA, with striking capability of nuclear power. He thus supports the Spanish social-democratic leader Sanchez.
However France is being opposed by Merz. The latter is more interested in developing Germany’s own war industry. Merz is less interested in partnering to develop a European fighter jet. That jet that would be quite independent of USA technology and thus less vulnerable to USA electronic interference. Merz also publicly rebukes Spain’s position on defence spending, as when he was visiting the White House and supplicating to Trump.
In the meantime the war widens and is sucking in many countries in its wake.
These various contradictions are complex. We detail how these seem to play out.
1. The USA and Israel Aims of the War in Iran.
The basic aim is to ensure a new, and ‘secure’ bastion in the Middle East to anchor the USA in the Middle East. Previously we have showed that such USA wishes (to re-draw the boundaries of the Middle East) dates back for a considerable time. The imperialists cannot quite say this out loud. Although they get more and more blatant in what they do say.
Some well-informed Marxist observers see a divergence between USA and Israeli war aims. Gilbert Achcar for example writes:
“Washington… fears the regime’s collapse, recognizing that such an outcome would likely lead to armed chaos and fragmentation, producing extreme instability in the Gulf region—an outcome entirely contrary to Washington’s interests, and even to Trump’s personal and familial interests (not to mention those of the Kushner and Witkoff families).”
Gilbert Achcar “What is Trump’s objective in Iran? 3/3/2026; Gilbert Achcar Blog
We disagree with this assessment. For the USA and Trump short-term interests are currently not as important as the longer term security for the USA and Israel. These imperialists are preparing for a world war against China after all. For this neither Washington or Jerusalem fear fragmentation in Iran – in fact they welcome it.
Admittedly the language currently used to “justify” this war is quite confused and divergent. It ranges from “removal of a nuclear threat”; “removal of missiles”; and “regime change”. Charges of an imminent nuclear threat are fatuous and were previously shown to be false. Given the fire-power of the two opposing sides, the “missile threat” is also not convincing. We are left with the last ‘justification’.
It is true that Trump wants a shorter war than perhaps does Israel:
“As President Trump uses U.S. military force overseas, his calculation has been that he can launch military operations with the loss of few American lives and minimal disruption to the economy… ”
Luke Broadwater; “Trump Wants a Quick Victory in Iran. But the War May Be Costly”; New York Times (NYT) 5 March, 2026 at NYT 5 March.
While the USA has stated several differing war aims, the Israelis have been consistent. Most clearly and adamantly they have stated they want a vassal state.
“While Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the U.N., said the conflict would continue “as long as it takes,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters Monday that the U.S. is not engaged in a nation-building effort, saying, “This is not Iraq. This is not endless.”
“War in Middle East widens as Israeli and U.S. planes pound Iran and Tehran and its proxies hit back”; Mar 2, 2026: PBS
Now President Trump publicly announces that he wants a “role in choosing”:
“President Trump on Thursday said he should have a role in choosing Iran’s new leader, and that Mojtaba Khamenei, a son of the former leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who appeared to be the leading candidate to succeed his father, was an “unacceptable” choice…
Mr. Trump’s statement is also the latest in a series of contradictory claims about Washington’s war aims…
His comments… are bound to remind Iranians of a period in their history taught in the country’s schools: the 1953 coup, run by the C.I.A., that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected prime minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, to assure that Britain had access to Iranian oil.
That coup ultimately led to the installation of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi as the shah of Iran.”
David Sanger; “Trump says he should have a role in picking Iran’s new leader.“ NYT 5 March 2026
As the intensity of the bombing war continues, the USA and Israel are obviously trying to simply obliterate it. They are doing a faster and more naked, unrestrained “Gaza” on Iran.
2. The Widening War
As they strive to achieve this ‘regime change’, the war is steadily widening. See BBC Maps. Map 1 (Sites hit by the imperialists inside Iran from BBC “In Maps Strikes across the Middle East” March 5 2026): .

and Map 2 Sites across the Middle East hit by Iranian fired missiles (BBC Ibid):

The United Kingdom (UK) under Prime Minister Starmer, is part of Europe for this context. Significant sections of the British ruling class have publicly urged considering at least a ‘normalization;’ with the EU following Brexit.
The quagmire of the current capitalist contradictions in the UK requires a separate fuller discussion. In the meantime however, it can be confidently said that the anti-working class government of Prime Minister Starmer struggles.
Several events evidence this. This includes Labour Party’s mismanagement of the economy as they serve the British ruling class rather than the workers of the UK. Labour continues to bow and bend to the right currents being fanned by the fascist Nigel Farage’s “Reform” Party. The Peter Mandelson affair rocks the Party. However the appalling sectarian and petty squabbles of Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana of “Your Party” do not help the working class. Here – our focus is on the current imperialist war of aggression on Iran.
Starmer has incurred the wrath of Trump for refusing to allow the USA to use the Chaga Islands and Diego Garcia base for USA air force flights en route to Iran. Trump calls Starmer “definitely not like Winston Churchill”. While an unwitting compliment from our viewpoint, Starmer is stung by Trump’s anger:
“The President said the Prime Minister’s refusal to allow the US military to use the base was unlike anything that had “happened between our countries before.” The UK Government had refused US forces from using Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, citing international law, but the Sir Keir said on Sunday evening that he would allow them access for “specific and limited defensive purposes.”
Speaking to The Telegraph, Trump said Sir Keir “took far too long” to change his mind. He said: “That’s probably never happened between our countries before. It sounds like he was worried about the legality.”
Alex Storey; “Donald Trump has said he is “very disappointed” in Sir Keir Starmer for initially blocking the US from using the Diego Garcia military base to strike Iran”: 2 March 2026; London BroadCasting LBC at: LBC 2 March
But if Starmer were to back Trump openly – he risks being accused of repeating Tony Blair’s lies in support for the Iraq war of George Bush. That episode has been widely exposed in the UK. Starmer can ill afford that repetition. So he has tried to “trim sail”. But… Nevertheless, the UK has been dragged in anyway, because of its base in Cyprus. Iranian missiles hit it. And… so has this dragged into the fray – France and Greece:
“European allies are rushing warships and anti-drone defences to Cyprus after a British air base was hit on the island over the weekend. The small Eastern Mediterranean nation has found itself unexpectedly drawn into the aftermath of US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
The UK has announced it is sending helicopters with counter-drone capabilities as well as the Type 45 Destroyer, HMS Dragon.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed in a televised address that a French frigate, the Languedoc, would arrive in Cyprus on Tuesday evening.
Greece has already agreed to send four F-16 fighter jets as well as two frigates, including the ship Psara which is equipped with a Greek anti-drone system called Centauros.”
Jessica Parker; “European allies rush to bolster Cyprus defences after drones target British base”; BBC 4 March, 2026
Mentioning these above countries being roiled by the war, does not even acknowledge the further widening scale of the war. For example it does not factor in the separate Pakistan and Afghanistan war that rages now. This borders Iran. Pakistan under its renewed military leadership hews very closely to the USA. Again this will require separate examination. However it is relevant as the Drop Site author Emran Feroz points out:
“While the U.S. and Israel continue a massive bombing campaign targeting Iran, another conflict continues to escalate nearby between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In recent weeks, the two countries have gone from border skirmishes to what senior Pakistani officials have described as “open war”—with airstrikes and bombardments targeting military positions and civilian communities in both countries.
The escalation comes amid increasingly warm ties between the Trump administration and the military junta in Islamabad, which has pitched itself as a regional security partner for Washington after its withdrawal from Afghanistan five years ago. This relationship has continued to grow despite escalating pressure on Pakistan over its crackdown on the rule of law, media freedom, and ongoing suppression of political opposition movements.
Afghanistan and Pakistan both share borders with Iran, and the outcome of the war between them is likely to shape postwar developments in Iran as it fights for survival under a joint U.S.-Israeli military assault.”
Emran Feroz; “Dozens Killed and Thousands Displaced in Growing Pakistan-Afghan Border Conflict”; The Drop Site March 5, 2026; at Feroz at Drop Site 5 March
It will not be known until very much later, whether the Pakistani government had prior knowledge of the coming assault on Iran.
3. The dynamic dictating European Union politicians response
Let us come back to the European Union. One caution before we progress too far. Several patterns that can be discerned, in this complex situation – defy any simple explanation.
First there is a rivalry between the USA and the whole of the European Union.
Secondly there is a rivalry between the European countries themselves, best exemplified by France and Germany.
Finally – there is a tendency for nations to favour one or the other of the two major imperialist nations. That is either the still dominant USA or the still rising China threatening to overtake the USA.
The only framework that helps to make sense of these recent developments is the push from the USA to undercut the USA-EU alliance and the NATO framework. Trump’s administration came to power for a USA ruling class determined to:
“… to secure their profit base. In this, it is necessary that it prepare for a coming battle with its major international opponent – the Chinese state. The European Union (EU) is another opponent – but one of less urgency than that of China. However, the EU – in particular Germany – has been closely tied to the markets of China in terms of both an export and an import base. So the USA ruling class is threatening it. In order to tackle their agenda the USA ruling class regime is forced to make far-sweeping changes. These are disruptive by nature. Therefore, the goals of the ruling class of the USA now are to re-structure its state to ensure its hegemony against its main rivals, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the European Union.”
Theses on The Trump 2 Administration and the USA Ruling Class: A re-set to a new imperialist order 13th April, 2025; at: 13th April 2025; MLRG.online
The EU has been put on alert several times now by the Trump administration. Perhaps the first shock came when Vice-President Vance attacked European leaders frontally at the Munich Security Conference of 2025. But there have been many more instances where a contempt for European leaders from USA leaders is openly visible.
Trump and the USA ruling class wants from European leaders:
Complete obedience; their taking over of the NATO military funding; reduction of any trade barriers for the USA; removal of digital safety regulations of the EU limiting USA high tech firms; and preferably a slide into rightwing leaderships of governments.
(See “Very Slowly Some World Leaders Grow a Spine – Trump’s Arrogant Claims over Greenland and Europe’s Response”; MLRG.online 22 January 2026; ).
4. Chancellor Merz of Germany’s stance – servility to Trump
The response of Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, after Trump’s arrival at the World Economic Forum at Davos in January 2026 was to acknowledge the need for “force”:
”We have entered an era of great power politics,” Merz said. “The new world of the great powers is founded upon power, strength and when necessary, force. It is not a cozy place.”
Wesley Dockery; “Davos: Germany’s Merz says old world order ‘unraveling’”; 22 January 2026; Deutsches Welle January 22 2026
As Deutsche Welle concluded – he was certainly not pushing back against the USA:
“Merz’s ongoing stripping of Germany’s social net, and transferring massive resources to new arming of a stronger armed forces. But he remains sure that the best bet for the EU is in the USA alliance:
“Merz said a “world where only power counts is a dangerous place.” He recalled the Nazi regime in Germany from 1933 to 1945, which “pulled the world into a black abyss.”
At the same time, he urged Europe not to give up on the NATO alliance and its relationship with the US.”
Ibid; January 22 2026
We previously in 2025 pointed out that Merz would not rock the USA:
“that section of the capitalist class that wishes to maintain a certain distance from the complete engulfment by USA capital, has been unable to prevent the bloom of the Christian Democrat Union (CDU) under Friederich Merz. Merz will be – once in power as Chancellor – even more flagrantly following a pro-USA policy.”
“The “Metamorphoses’ of Would be CDU Chancellor Friederich Merz and the 2025 German Federal Elections; 5 February 2025; at: MLRG.online 5 February 2025
Unsurprisingly, Merz has stayed close to the USA during both the Gaza genocide and now, the Iranian inferno:
“Merz… due to meet the US president at the White House on Tuesday, has suggested the strikes that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were justified while directing his criticism at Tehran’s retaliatory strikes…
“International rules have relatively little effect — all the more so when violations carry few consequences,” Merz said on Sunday. “Now is not the time to lecture our partners and allies. For all our doubts, we share many of their goals — even if we are not in a position to achieve them ourselves.”
Merz has form — when Trump joined Benjamin Netanyahu in targeting Iranian nuclear facilities last year, he said Israel was doing “our dirty work”.
Anne-Sylvaine Chassany: “Friedrich Merz to meet Trump after justifying strikes on Iran”; FT 3 March 2026
In addition he and the single-minded French aircraft firm of Dassault – are together sabotaging Macron’s plans. Macron pushes for a joint Franco-German development of a new aircraft independent of USA technology:
“Dassault and its hard-nosed chief executive Éric Trappier are intent on keeping control over the fighter part of the €100bn Future Combat Air System (FCAS), despite staunch opposition from partner Airbus. Macron has tried to drag the project back
from the brink in repeated talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz…
the company today is one of a handful of global leaders making combat planes, rivalling the likes of the US’s Lockheed Martin.”
Leila Abboud and Sarah White; “Dassault Aviation: the defence group blocking the €100bn Franco-German jet project”; FT 11 February 2026;
If it does not go through, Macron seems likely to pull back from other joint Franco-German projects:
“Macron also made the link to a sister project, the Main Ground Combat System, which was announced around the same time as FCAS, and under which the Germans would take the lead on a new tank system.
“If the German partner were to call the joint aircraft into question, we’d be forced to call the joint tank into question as well. You can imagine everything that would unravel — the synergies, everything built over the past seven years,” he said.”
Leila Abboud; “EU-US tensions over Greenland and tech are far from over, says Emmanuel Macron”; FT 10 February 2026
The French hold a nuclear bomb capacity – while the rest of Europe does not. That of the UK in fact belongs to and is controlled by the USA. Macron suggested the French could extend their “umbrella” over the rest of Europe. Merz’s attitude currently jeopardises this joint unity:
“German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has initiated talks with France on strengthening Europe’s nuclear deterrent as he urged the continent to bolster its defences and “repair” strained relations with the US. The discussions, centred on the possibility of Germany joining France’s nuclear umbrella, underline mounting anxiety in Europe over an expected reduction in the US military presence on the continent, as Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine enters its fifth year.”
Anne-Sylvaine Chassany and Henry Foy; “Friedrich Merz holds talks with Emmanuel Macron over nuclear Deterrence”; FT 13 February 2026.
Despite Macron’s offer, Germany is proving reluctant:
“President Emmanuel Macron’s offer to station French nuclear assets in Germany and several other European countries marks the most important revision to France’s nuclear doctrine in a generation. It is a significant step forward in Europe’s efforts to take more responsibility for its own defence…
Other allies, led by Germany, wanted to know what Paris would do for them. Macron’s answer, which surpassed expectations, is so-called forward deterrence: a nuclear co-operation offer to Germany, Poland, Denmark and other countries to take part in joint exercises and support missions and, potentially, station Rafale jets or nuclear-armed cruise missiles. The closer co-operation with Berlin on nuclear deterrence is groundbreaking and will put it on a par with London on military matters, balm to an otherwise irritable Franco-German relationship…. A French president will remain in sole control of the nuclear button. To some Europeans, that limits the credibility of French deterrence.”
Editorial Board; “France’s groundbreaking nuclear offer to Europe”; FT 2 March 2026.
Yet another sign of Merz’s Germany taking a pro-USA line is the attitude to China. Of course, the markets of Europe are being saturated with cheaper Chinese goods. Nonetheless Merz’s attitude to China mirrors exactly that of trump’s:
“ Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany arrived in China on Wednesday with a… list of complaints for his hosts, asking for closer diplomatic ties but also relief from economic policies that he said were impeding “fair competition.
Mr. Merz, who took pains before the trip to say he would not be “lecturing” Beijing, laid out his critiques in a speech at a meeting of the Advisory Council of German-Chinese Business, to an audience that included Premier Li Qiang, China’s second-highest ranking official.
The chancellor was more blunt and more specific in his criticism than other western leaders …
Mr. Merz called on China to reduce subsidies for its domestic manufacturers, to allow the value of its currency, the renminbi, to rise, and to ensure continued exports of raw materials, such as critical minerals — all of which would benefit German industry.
Germany’s relations with China have become strained in recent years over complaints that Beijing was employing unfair practices that had contributed to a growing trade imbalance that has led to a flood of Chinese exports into Europe. In 2023, Germany defined China as a “partner, competitor and systemic rival,” and it has moved to reduce its dependency on Chinese goods and tightened export controls…
Yet China no longer presents the same opportunities to Germany that it once did. German firms have seen their profits in the country steadily erode as Chinese companies have gained market share. The same is happening globally for the likes of German carmakers, chemical producers and machinery manufacturers that are trying to compete with Chinese rivals, resulting in the loss of thousands of industrial jobs in Germany each month.
“China was a driver of German prosperity in past decades,” said Noah Barkin, an expert on European-Chinese relations at Rhodium Group, a research firm. “Now it represents the biggest external threat to Germany’s economic well-being.“
David Pierson and Jim Tankersley ;“Germany’s Leader Delivers a Blunt Warning to China on Trade”; NYT February 25, 2026
France is wobbling in regards to its attitude to the USA. Partly this is Macron’s character. Partly it reflects his own weakness in the country and very shallow support. As seen above they have already sent a battleship to Cyprus.
What about Spain?
5. Spain Resists USA threats, and is defended by China:
In sharp contrast to Merz, has been the attitude of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez who not only rebuked Trump about morals – but somewhat more tangibly – refused military bases support to the USA:
“As he warned that the US risked triggering a spiral of war with its “illegal” attack on Iran, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also delivered a pointed rebuke to Donald Trump that no other European leader would dare to make.
Arguing that politicians should make people’s lives better, Sánchez said: “It is absolutely unacceptable that those leaders who are incapable of fulfilling that duty use the smoke of war to hide their failures and, in the process, line the pockets of a few — the only ones who win when the world stops building hospitals to start making missiles.,.
not only has he refused to let the US use two jointly operated military bases in Spain to strike Iran, he has also launched a broadside against the US-Israeli attacks by likening them to the “unjust” 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Trump, in turn, has threatened to punish “terrible” Spain for the veto on bases by cutting off US trade with the country. “We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” the US president said on Monday, raising the possibility of a blanket “embargo” to halt commerce.”
Barney Jopson in Madrid and Amy Mackinnon “How Pedro Sánchez became Donald Trump’s nemesis in Europe”; FT 5 March 2026
This was not the first time Sánchez has confronted Trump. Previously he had rejected the ‘demand’ for spending 5% on NATO arms:
“Sánchez’s last public clash with Trump came last June when he refused to agree to Nato’s new requirement to spend 5 per cent of GDP on defence. The president accused Spain of seeking a “free ride” and threatened to “make them pay twice as much” in tariffs. But the US did not follow through.
Barney Jopson in Madrid and Amy Mackinnon “How Pedro Sánchez became Donald Trump’s nemesis in Europe”; FT 5 March 2026
It is in Spain’s favour that she has relatively little trade with the USA. But she does have one dependency on the USA. That being liquefied natural gas (LNG):
“The Spanish sectors that export most to the US are olive oil, wine, ceramics, electrical equipment and machinery. But in aggregate terms Spain has less direct trade exposure to the US than the Eurozone as a whole, according to the Bank of Spain. The US received 4.6 per cent of Spanish exports in 2025, far below the average for Eurozone exporters.
But Spain’s dependence on US gas imports is a potentially severe pain point…
The country is one of Europe’s liquefied natural gas hubs and the US accounted for 31 per cent of its supply in the past 12 months — with the figure rising to 44 per cent in January, according to Enagás, Spain’s national gas operator. “
Barney Jopson in Madrid and Amy Mackinnon “How Pedro Sánchez became Donald Trump’s nemesis in Europe”; FT 5 March 2026
Moreover Spain has been forging more links to China. Indeed Scott Bessent Treasury Secretary directly threatened Sanchez over this:
“Last year, as Sánchez prepared to visit Chinese President Xi Jinping for the third time in two years, US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent warned that aligning more closely with China “would be cutting your own throat”.
Barney Jopson in Madrid and Amy Mackinnon “How Pedro Sánchez became Donald Trump’s nemesis in Europe”; FT 5 March 2026
In fact, Spain has been actively soliciting Chinese trade, but even more – it has sought foreign direct investment:
“Chinese direct investment in Spain has been growing over the last decade, more than doubling to nearly $12 billion since 2017. The agreement with Envision followed an announcement by the Chinese-owned manufacturer Hygreen Energy to invest more than $2 billion on hydrogen generation projects in southern Spain.”
Patricia Cohen: “Spain Opens Its Doors to China as a European Trade War Looms”; October 30, 2024; NYT
And actual trade with China is quite important. This is seen in the graph below from: Chart JUNE 17, 2025 Chart of the Week: Spain deepens trade ties with China by Fathom Consulting; at LSEG Financial Investment;

Hence after the various USA threats against Spain, China has sprung to Spain’s defence:
“China came out on Wednesday in defense of Spain and categorically rejected the idea that international trade could become a weapon used for political pressure. “Trade should not be used as a weapon or as a tool,” stated the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, in response to a question from Efe regarding the threats from Washington to “cut all trade” with Spain and even impose an embargo…
China and Spain have strengthened their ties in recent years amid growing rivalry between Beijing and Washington. Spain is one of China’s most relevant trading partners in Southern Europe and a strategic entry point for Chinese investments in infrastructure, energy, and logistics.
Chinese companies are involved in key and sensitive assets in the Spanish energy and port systems, while the Chinese market has become a priority destination for Spanish agri-food products, especially pork, olive oil, and wine.”
Lucas De La Cal; “China comes to Spain’s defense after Trump’s threat“; El Mundo America 4 March 2026; at El Mundo 4 March
Thus – no one should be surprised at Merz’s emphatic support of Trump’s rant against Spain at the White House meeting of March 3rd 2026. Merz had been warned by the Opposition ‘Die Linke’ not to kneel down to Trump. But that is exactly what Merz did. As a ‘Der Spiegel’ commentator put it:
“It was a humiliating moment that will haunt Merz for a long time.
There sat the German Chancellor, listening to the US President’s tirades. Trump was particularly incensed about those countries where the US maintains military bases—but was not allowed to use them for the attack on Iran.
British Prime Minister Starmer (“no Churchill”) felt the brunt of his anger. Pedro Sánchez fared even worse. Spain was a “terrible” ally, Trump said. Trade would be halted, perhaps even an embargo imposed. And besides, Madrid hadn’t even increased its defense spending as much as he had stipulated for NATO countries.
And Merz?…
Instead, he joined the charge. Trump’s figures were “correct,” he said, referring to defense spending. Spain had to accept the target.”
Steffen Lüdke; “Scandal in Washington – Merz abandoned Europe”; Der Spiegel 4th March 2026
6. Conclusion
As we said at the opening: “Wars habitually prise open any precarious and ‘polite’ stability, to flaunt on the world’s stage the underlying class and national divides.”
The events thus far for 2026 seem to confirm a leaning towards the USA under Chancellor Merz.
They seem to confirm that Spain under Sanchez has moved towards China.
There will be more revelations to come – the longer the war goes on.
